PLANTS OF ECONOMIC
IMPORTANCE |

No one can deny the
importance of plants in our daily life. It is the plants
which fulfill the basic needs of human beings i.e. food,
clothing and shelter. Besides, they are source of majority
of the medicines which are used for different ailments
through out the human civilizations. Some of economic
plants are highlighted here. |

Cotton (Gossypium
hirsutum): |
|
It is one of the most
important cash crops of Pakistan. It is a kharif crop
cultivated in southern Punjab and Sindh. The height of the
plant ranges from 3-5 ft. Sandy soil and warm climate are
favourable for its growth. Cotton is raw material for
textile industries which is the backbone of our economy
and a major part of foreign exchange is earned through its
export. Cotton fiber
is used in making quilt and pillows. The raw material,
after extracting the oil, is used as fodder for cattle. |

Nannorhops

This plant is cultivated in
Mazri plain areas of southern NWFP like D.I. Khan, Bannu, Kohat
and most of cental Punjab. The plant is 2-3 ft. tall and
is used in making mats and bed (charpai). It is one of the
economically important plants of the country. |
