Public Interest Services offered by Pakistan Museum of Natural History

Pakistan Museum of Natural History was established in 1976 under the auspices of Pakistan Science Foundation and is only natural history museum in the country. It has four divisions namely Botanical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Zoological Sciences and Public Services. The first three divisions are engaged in the collection, preservation, identification and research activities pertaining to plants, fossils & minerals and animals resources of Pakistan respectively, while the latter is responsible for mass education and popularization of the natural history through various displays, exhibits and dioramas. The museum serves the global and national needs in three important areas of natural history i.e., Research, Conservation and Informal Education. Pakistan Museum of Natural History offers the public interest services in following ways:

Informal Education :
In this museum, the scientific information and research carried out all over the country is made understandable to general public through fascinating exhibits and displays. Thus, it is an excellent place for public to get informal education on various scientific disciplines through amusement. It is some sort of inquiry based science education platform for the public. Monthly, thousands of visitors including students from schools, colleges and universities across the country, general public and foreigners visit the museum and this number is continuously increasing due to addition of new exhibits in the museum. During, 2017-18, more than 2 hundred thousand visitors visited the museum and more than 4 million rupees were earned through ticket sale.
Attractive Exhibits and Dioramas :
The museum has 08 Display Galleries with more than 100 attractive 2-D and 3-D animals, plants, minerals, rocks and IT based exhibits, displays and dioramas. The museum is open all the week days from 9am to 8pm during summer months and from 9:30am to 5:30pm during winter months, which accommodates and provides good opportunity to public for entertainment as well as for education.

Iconic Specimens : .
The museum has also some unique/iconic specimens such as; World Largest specimen of Whale Shark, large Skeleton of Blue Whale, Gharyal, Balochitherium, Birds and Animated Dinosaurs dioramas), which are not found elsewhere in the world and it gives the museum its specific identity and excellence and creates great attraction for the public.
 
Kids Corner/Play Area :
There are state-of-the art IT based Kiosik Systems in the museum, which is the most fascinating and attracting exhibits for children. There are various knowledge-based videos and games on these systems, which have proved a wonderful way of transforming knowledge and information to the children.
 
Excellent Availability of Data :
In research related scientific Divisions of the museum like Botanical Sciences, Earth Sciences and Zoological Sciences, there are more than 1.4 million specimens of animals, plants, rocks, minerals, gem stones, which is a excellent source of reference collection from all over the country for the research needs of M.Phil and Ph.D students.
 
Reference Library :  
In museum, there is a reference library with a corner of archives. It has thousands of national and international research papers, books, technical reports, popular articles, conferences papers etc published by the museum scientists and researchers.
 
Organizing Workshops, Symposia, Trainings, Congress and Celebration of National and International Days :
The museum regularly organizes workshops, trainings, symposia, congress on various aspects, and also celebrates various National and International Days such as; Museum Day, Biodiversity Day, Earth Day, Wildlife Day etc in collaboration with different organizations.
 
Collaboration with National and International Organizations :
The museum has many MoUs with National and International Organizations. Through joint field work and exchange of expertise and experiences, the museum has increased its reference collection data and developed various exhibits.

Through regularly updated website and well connected Facebook, the museum is penetrated in the society and through such ways, it enhances the public interest to the museum resulting in continuous increase in visitors number. It also play important role in the publicity of the museum in the country.
